Start with the kind of help you want
For a structured course
Start with Duolingo, Babbel, Busuu or Rosetta Stone. The meaningful choice is free gamified practice, expert-built lessons, community-supported CEFR progression or immersion.
For speaking as the main activity
Start with Speak. Compare it with Love Languages: Learn Solo when you want speaking to connect with questions, listening, images, personal Vocab and broader language coverage.
For audio-first learning
Start with Pimsleur when a predictable, hands-free lesson suits you. Consider Love Languages: Learn Solo when you need quick help with a situation you did not plan for.
For real voices and your own context
Memrise centres native-speaker video. Love Languages: Learn Solo centres the language that comes from your questions, supported media and conversations.
For learning that follows your life
Love Languages: Learn Solo can begin with a lesson or the sentence you need to say right now. Save it, then bring it back through Vocab, voice practice, games or Daily Practice where supported.
Three questions before you choose
Pick a primary rhythm
Choose the product whose normal session resembles how you are realistically willing to learn several times a week.
Check the exact language
A large headline count never guarantees identical courses, voices, feedback or AI features for the language direction you need.
Use a combination when it earns its place
A course and a personal companion can solve different problems. Two subscriptions are useful only when both have a clear role.
What this guide cannot tell you
- This is a useful shortlist, not a claim that these are the only language apps worth considering.
- We have not run a controlled study proving that one of these apps teaches better than the others.
- Product access, languages and features change. Follow the detailed page for dated sources and limitations.
Questions learners ask
Why is there no single number-one app?
The products solve different jobs. A course, an audio method, a pronunciation tool and a language exchange cannot be fairly collapsed into one score without deciding what the learner needs first.
Can I use two language apps?
Yes, if each has a clear job—for example, one for a structured course and Love Languages: Learn Solo for questions and conversations from your own life.
Does supporting more languages make an app better?
No. Breadth matters when it includes the language you need, but depth, course design and feature availability still need separate checks.
